Ramble through the Rocks (2011) is a walking tour with artist Keg de Souza exploring various communities within the Rocks area and their continual displacement from first white settlement until now - and discovers it all points back to one thing: Real Estate.

So anyone who knows me knows how my hero is Michael Jackson. I truly believe that it's fate I've found myself in MJ's hometown for a project this Summer.

Zanny and I are doing a 6-week residency through Mess Hall in the Roger's Park area of Chicago but have been drawn to work close by in city of Gary, Indiana.

We were fortunate enough to meet Sam A Love, one of the keyholders of Mess Hall who grew up around Gary and still very much has a strong connection to the area; besides photographing the city for the last 8 years and running local tours of Gary he is determined to show people that Gary has more going on than one of the highest homicide rates in the country. He has already introduced us to some amazing local activist groups, including CDOP: Central District Organizing Project and Local 219: The People's Union, both of which he is part of.

But back to MJ...

The latest hoohar in Gary is over the fact the Mayor, Rudy Clay along with Michael's father Joe Jackson, is proposing a $300 Million dollar MJ megaplex, including everything from a museum, cultural centre, concert hall, memorial pavillion, conference centre, elevated light rail and a golf course!

But wait... the clincher is that in the megaplex press conference Mayor Clay said:

"If this fails ... it will be Gary, Indiana, people's fault."

"Sometimes, people throw poison into the soup. We don't want Gary people throwing poison in the soup."

As one reporter said, "A number of Gary residents can't even afford to throw poison in a pot of soup, let alone a can of soup, because of unemployment, layoffs and a lack of new jobs."

What kind of mayor would speak about the people in his electorate like that?! - This man has a giant billboard on the main Broadway drag of Gary with his name in giant letters followed by "Cares About People"- yes, in inverted commas! - (he should really trademark that slogan.)

In a city which competes for the title of "murder capital of the US", where unemployment is high and derelict buildings are a dime a dozen the mayor has his priorities on a $300 million development?!

Now he seems like the fly in the soup to me.

Whatever Floats Your Boat:
Escape from Cockatoo Island

Whatever Floats Your Boat is a project channelling the spirit of the legendary Australian bushranger Captain Thunderbolt and his wife Mary Ann Bugg. Frederick Ward was serving his second sentence at Cockatoo Island Gaol for stealing horses, folklore says Bugg frequently swam to the island with food for Ward and a file so he could cut through his chains. On 11th September 1863 Fred Ward and another prisoner escaped by swimming to Balmain and it is believed Mary Ann assisted them. The police were slow to admit of their breakout as no one had ever escaped from Cockatoo Island before. They headed north towards the Uralla area, where Ward became known as the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt. In the case of Mary Ann, it is said she is responsible for Fred Ward being at large for so long and her Aboriginal heritage the reason for Thunderbolt’s dislike of firearms. At a time when most women were subjugated to a life of raising kids and crops Mary Ann had the opportunity to show her spirit and determination alongside Captain Thunderbolt.

Working on the island that housed the old dockyards in the Sydney Harbour and plenty of dark histories including a penitentiary that was closed down in the 60s due to its poor conditions there is no shortage of eeriness here, from the ghosts of prisoners and dock workers past to the racist graffiti still donning the heritage walls. During my studio residency on the island I will build a small boat, the Black Mary- in honour of Mary Ann Bugg, and attempt to row it back to Balmain for my own escape from Cockatoo Island.

ANd special thnaks to our self proclaimed NON-celebrity, the awe-inspiring j katz. What an amazing night thanks to everyone who came and those who brought films!

Cockatoo Island Residency

These are pictures of my current Cockatoo Island Studio in the Sydney Harbour. The amazing Annie Laerkesen has set up these new studio spaces on the island. The building + the view is beautiful, a major juxtaposition to the dark past of the island.

A quick thrown together history:
Cockatoo Island is the largest island in the harbour. The name Wa-rea-mah was used by the local Indigenous people, pre-1788 you would find Sulfur-Crested Cockatoos (and Red Gums) on the island, hence the current name. Since this time it has been transformed into a harsh, eerie shell of the huge industrial estate it was home to between that past and now.

The island also housed a Penitentiary that was closed down in the late 60s due to poor conditions. At one stage their were 500 convicts housed in the overcrowded island barracks.

Frederick Ward was held at the prison until 1963 when his Indigenous lover broke him out and together they swam back to the mainland where he rode North-West NSW towards Uralla. Until 1870, when the police shot and killed him, he was known as the infamous bushranger, Thunderbolt . He is the only known escapee from Cockatoo Island Penitentiary.

The 70s saw the next unlucky island tenants, orphaned and neglected girls in the reformatory, set to work embroidering and sewing.

The island is also the site where the first modern war ship built in Australia. was built in 1912.

The island continues to be used for ship building and repair until 1992.

In 2000 during the time of the Olympics in Sydney Isabell Coe and about 10 Indigenous Activists set up a Tent Embassy Consulate on Cockatoo Island. At the time we were squatting at the Broadway Squats (http://squatspace.com/history/index.php)

Since 2001 The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has had control of the island and are trying to relaunch it as a site for cultural events. One of the biggest events so far was the 2008 Sydney Biennale.

bottling the last beer ever brewed at the brewery

Washing bottles is a BIG part of brewing beer. The thing about it is that you can't be slack as you really, really don't want any infection to occur sending your beer bad. I'm sure the extensive amount washing necessary turns many brewers off. The bottling part is fun. Add some sugar, fill the bottle and cap. The capping is my favourite. The waiting stage I'm now up to isn't so fun. My brew will supposedly reach its prime around 6 weeks after it's been bottled- that's if I've managed to follow the instructions correctly... ho hum and we wait.....

Over the last few weeks I've started a residency at Frasers studios. Frasers is the company that bought the old Tooth's/Kent/CUB brewery in Chippendale.

"Frasers Property have introduced a new initiative to make creative use of vacant warehouse space in the old Kent Brewery development site, on Broadway. From September, three warehouses at 10-14 Kensington Street, Chippendale will be temporarily transformed into a multi-disciplinary art space, with the help of Queen Street Studio."

During my residency I have decided to brew "the last beer ever brewed at the brewery". I've never brewed before so this is definitely a learning experience for me. I must say so far it aint rocket science and everything seems to be going to plan... [touch wood]. But I guess I will see when it comes time to taste test it.

I've discovered Astrid is a keen home brewer she says
"a very brief description of beer brewing: you add grains (often in a molasses-style liquid) to sugar and water and yeast. after a week or so, "wort" is made. then you bottle it with more sugar, which ferments further and this makes bubbly beer. the second dose of sugar is mainly to carbonate and only increases the alcohol content of the wort by about 0.5%."

Last week I went out to What's Brewing in Rockdale (despite their questionable logo) and stocked up on my supplies. Driving up Rocky point road it's not hard to spot- just look for the mannequin in an apron drinking from a keg on the side of the road! The guy out there was pretty helpful Swerve said when he went out there he got beer on arrival!

Also I've decided not to drink whilst brewing. I think this will make my brew taste all the better when drinking day comes around! Speaking to Texta about my ideas for the brew she said "All you think about is beer" it was pretty satisfying replying "It's ART".

Riding your bike around Yogyakarta as a foreigner heaps of the kids yell to
you "Hello Mister!!" My favourite was when they know a bit more English and
add "I love you".

Even with the knowledge that the Indonesian language has a non- gender
specific term for he/she you still can't help feeling that you're beginning
to look more like a man.

Snippets and stupid things I did, said or overheard in Indonesia on a 3
month residency last year. A series of pencil and pen drawings with rubber
stamped text then printed on the Rizzeria stencil press and handbound into zines.

Well you’re not alone… There Goes The Neighbourhood: Redfern and the Politics of Urban Space is a book produced in conjunction with an exhibition in Sydney which explores these issues. From Collingwood to Redfern to New York to Copenhagen people the world over are negotiating life in the city – squatting, living space, evictions, rents and so on. Come along to a launch of the book and a discussion about spatial politics in the city.

There Goes the Neighborhood begins with a close study of Redfern before expanding into international examples to provide a detailed exploration of how the phenomenon of gentrification is altering the relationship between democracy and demography around the world. This book has been published in tandem with an exhibition of the same name and many of the contributions come from participating artists in the exhibition: Brenda L. Croft (Australia), 16beaver (USA), Daniel Boyd (Australia), Temporary Services (USA), Jakob Jakobsen (Denmark), Lisa Kelly (Australia), SquatSpace (Australia), Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro (Germany/Australia), Evil Brothers (Australia), You Are Here (Australia), Michael Rakowitz (USA), Miklos Erhardt and Little Warsaw (Hungary), Bijari (Brazil) and Democracia (Spain). Terra Nullius, Squatspace in Weimar

To coincide with “Australia Day” 26 January 2009, an exhibition called “Terra Nullius” was launched in Weimar, Germany. It’s a show of Aussie artists curated by Frank Motz and Deborah Kelly.

Squatspace's piece for the show encompasses contributions from the German students who came on our most recent Redfern Waterloo Tour of Beauty in August 2008.

Here’s a roundup of what the show is all about:

The double exhibition with the name “TERRA NULLIUS - Contemporary Art from Australia” will be seen at ACC in Weimar (Germany) from January 26 (Australia Day) til March 22, 2009 and from May 1 til July 26, 2009, at Halle 14 in Leipzig (Germany) - co-curated by the Australian artist Deborah Kelly. The latter space is located at the Leipzig Cotton Spinning Mill, the new epicentre of contemporary art in East Germany (with 13 galleries and our non-for-profit Halle 14).

Approximately 45 works of art (installations, photographs, mixed media works, paintings, moving images, and other forms of presentation) from approximately 20 artists and artists groups will be shown on an exhibition area of about 300 square metres
(Weimar) and 1,500 square metres (Leipzig).

The artist include
Tony Albert, Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro, Jon Campbell, Destiny Deacon, Merran Sierakowski, Squatspace, Richard Bell, Brook Andrew, boatpeople.org, George Gittoes, Dianne Jones (see flyer above for complete list)

The exhibition might become a process-based project, developing further from station one to station two of the exhibition, from Weimar to Leipzig, or might even change a bit on each of the specific locations. Here are some more information about the show:

TERRA NULLIUS
Exhibition rationale

The 17th century British Crown considered Australia to be an empty, uncultivated land which could be claimed without impediment.

Indigenous peoples were denied rights to their land, using “terra nullius,” a legal principal only finally overturned in 1992. The ensuing conflicts between settler and indigenous peoples remain unresolved to this day.

When former diplomat Kevin Rudd defeated long-time conservative prime minister John Howard, an era came to an end – and with the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, and the Australian government’s formal apology to the “stolen generation” a period of change began. Perhaps, even hope. Nevertheless, terms like the “stolen generations,” “the intervention,” and “mutual obligation” persist as political realities.

Art is a civilising force that negates physical and psychological boundaries, undercuts the idyllic construction of the multicultural nation, calls into question political complexities and incongruities in Australian society, interrogates social exclusion, representation of Aboriginal people and interests, historical and current immigration and refugee politics.

The exhibition “TERRA NULLIUS,” with diverse contributions from contemporary Australian artists across media, is co-curated by Galerie ACC founder Frank Motz with artist Deborah Kelly from Sydney. It opens on
the 221st anniversary of the European invasion of Australia, Australia Day: 26 January 2009.

This gig is a fundraiser to bring some of the international artists out to Sydney for There Goes The Neighbourhood.

Are you yet another person who has had the rent jacked up and been outpriced and outed of your own space?...

Inspired by this global phenomenon of gentrification, There Goes The Neighbourhood is an exhibition, film festival, workshops and publication about the politics of space happening in May at the Performance Space.

The project brings together a group of local and international artists who have worked on various projects that have explored the relationship between community and space and we’re inviting them to develop these issues further in the contested local environment of Redfern.

The artists involved are: Daniel Boyd, Brenda Croft, Lisa Kelly, SquatSpace, Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro, Ned Sevil and friends (Australia), Temporary Services (USA), Jakob Jakobsen (Denmark), 16beaver (USA), Miklos Erhardt and Little Warsaw (Hungary), Michael Rakowitz (USA) and Bijari (Brazil). The Katies all had their nails into the one peach power suit, and things were getting hairier than a Poison after party. However Suzanne stepped in to suggest the divvying up of the garment between the ladies, shoulder pad by pleat by precious polka dot, and the Katies could not help but come to their fashion senses. Fresh back from 3 months eating dumplings and making noise in China, catch Justice Yeldham’s first gig back in Sydney. This guy is never sticks around for long before he’s off again- so don’t miss ‘the glass guy’ himself, even if he is a pane.

“What's been described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" is in fact the unique audio work of Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. By pressing his face and lips against the glass whist employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries, he turns disguarded household windows into crude musical instruments. Resulting in a wide variety of cacophonous noises that are strangely controlled and oddly musical.

Justice Yeldham is the latest alter-ego of Australian sound performer Lucas Abela, whose past sonic experiments were conducted under monikers like A Kombi, Dj Smallcock & Peeled Hearts Paste. Initially classed as an experimental turntablist, although his early work rarely resembled anything in the field. Early feats, saw him stab vinyl with Kruger style stylus gloves, bound on electro acoustic trampolines, drag race the popemobile across Sydney Harbour Bridge, perform deaf defying duet duels with amplified samurai swords, hospitalised by high powered turntables constructed from sewing machine motors, record chance John Peel sessions with the Flaming Lips, & be Otomo Yoshihides' favourite entry into his Ground Zero remix competition; 'Consummation' even though instead of sampling the CD he destroyed it using amplified skewers!”

Freshly back from shows in Vietnam we are proud to have this incredible female emcee up in Sydney for one show only!!! - and look out for her debut album which is about to be released!

Cities with maps [the size of phonebooks!]

Through my interest in cities, more specifically in the politics of space, gentrification and urban change I have found myself in one of the world’s great metropolises, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

For me one of the most striking things I found out about when researching a bit about Sao Paulo was the Prestes Maia occupation. This building was an old textiles factory, 22 storeys high squatted from 2003- 2007 by around 2000 people, the largest occupation in Latin America. 468 families made this unused downtown building their home. Although the occupation ended last year, there are many strong relationships formed and much thought that was drawn from here. A squat of this size is something I could not have dreamed ever existed.

Almost out of necessity, due to the size of the population and the squeeze of the city, many Sao Paulo art collectives are making work responding to gentrification or issues surrounding space. I feel I have landed in a huge web of people thinking about similar issues to myself, on the opposite side of the world. Many people here are working using collective practices and are very interested in hearing about SquatSpace and our work in Sydney.

Sao Paulo, a city with its population close to that of the entire country of Australia, with a city map the size of a phone book, I have decided to create a cartography as a case study of the Prestes Maia occupation and all the collectives involved. In some ways this is almost necessary to understand how everyone fits into the network.

In the tradition of process art, where the end product of art and craft, the objet d’art, is not the principal focus my project in Brazil is a visual map of my process of gathering, meeting, collating and associating people and relationships between the numerous active art collectives in Sao Paulo. Process art is concerned with the actual doing; art as a rite, ritual, and performance. Process art often entails an inherent motivation, rationale, and intentionality. Therefore, art is viewed as a creative journey or process, rather than as a deliverable or end product.

In this case I do have an end product, though it serves more as a a visual map of my process of meeting and trying to understand the relationships of this complex and intertwined network of the collectives and the artist community I am meeting in my time in Sao Paulo and their relationship to each other and also the Prestes Maia occupation. This mapping is not because I need to produce an ‘outcome’, but more due to the fact that I need to produce this map to understand my process.

Cities Without Maps is a mapping project of the Jagalan and Ratmakan Kampungs on the Code River (Kali Code) in Yogyakarta.

Making a project about a community as foreigners and presenting it to the community, in the community, was always going to be a daunting affair but our Cities Without Maps - Kota Tanpa Peta film screening was well attended and there was a general feeling of celebration in the Kampung. We had spread the word for everyone to bring a little food to share with everyone on the warung and trade for a book and gave helium balloons to the children. The next night we held a second screening at Mes56 and an artist talk which facilitated an interesting discussion about community based art.

When Zanny and I first arrived in Indonesia we were fascinated by the way directions were given, especially in kampungs like these ones we did our project in- that are densely populated by small houses/ single room dwellings with narrow gangs (laneways) connecting them. The mapping we witnessed was more of a "verbal mapping", where directions were given using landmarks or people's houses (you turn right past the mosque then keep walking til you see Pak Suki's house and it's across the gang) instead of a drawn map based on Cartesian principles, which we are so used to. We did not set out to make a map of this type, as if one was needed people in the kampungs would have already made one, but we set out to redefine what a map is for us.

Making this mapping project we explored various issues dealing with spatial politics. These areas were built as squatter settlements and the Sultan still owns the land, therefore the people living along Kali Code have a tenuous relationship to the land they live on. Some houses along the river are scheduled for demolition to make way for new apartments that will accomodate more people, in less space and the occupants will have to pay rent to live there.

In Jagalan and Ratmakan kampungs we also discovered everyone we met had a ghost story- these areas were built on Javanese and Chinese graveyards I even met a real life ghostbuster who spoke about the hierarchy of the ghost world. We used ghost stories in our film as a metaphor for this delicate relationship to space.

The fragile relationship this community has to their land, and the impending threat of being pushed out due to gentrification were just some of the parallels we found to the area we are conducting a study of in Sydney, Redfern.

As lil Zanny is bed ridden with guavas, yesterday I went out to Code River to meet Vanie and do the last day of filming and continue the hunt for the Ghostbuster of Kali Code! Vanie and I searched around for the elusive Sukir- who is very hard to find as he is so busy ghostbusting- and finally someone was home at his place. Unfortunately it wasn't him, but his wife who informed us that he was in West Java (maybe there is alot of paranormal activity there) and that he specialised in removing daemons and getting people out of trances, rather than busting ghosts. Luckily Vanie had met a part-time ghostbuster earlier on when the pigeon racing was happening and so we went back to the racing to find him. He was gone, but in true form of Kali Code everyone is able to point you in the direction of anyone you ask for. We found the part-time ghostbuster, not at his home, but where his sister makes bags to sell to tourists in Malioboro. He was more than happy to be interviewed about ghostbusting and was very animated, he even pulled out his ghost catching device - which looked strangely like a souped-up fishing rod! Interviewing him really felt like we were closer to placing the paranormal cherry on the cake of our project.

So after a series of blood tests we discovered that Zanny is not just sunburnt, she has Dengue Fever! We were wondering why she kept getting the "flu". There is no western medicine cure (belum) she has been instructed to not only to drink heaps of water but to eat banyak jambu (many guavas), drink pocari sweat and stay at home and rest- all of which she hates. She doesn't quite understand it because I love guavas and am happy to over indulge in them whilst she screws up her face in disgust at this evil that is meant to make her better. In prevention of falling ill to this nasty mosquito carried disease I have started layering the repellant on again like a 10 day tourist.

Yesterday, as part of our mapping project of Kali Code Zanny and I ran a drawing workshop with the kids. As an understatement, you could say it was a huge success! We were set to start at 10am and arrived at 8:30 to a bunch of kids already waiting for us with their little pencil cases and tables- they even cheered when we arrived!
First we played Draw off - a game my sister, Texta, and I invented a while back when she was newly appointed the matriarch of the marker- anyways, it involves you choosing a partner then drawing them, whilst they simultaneously draw you. Simple enough concept- but the results were astounding and involved more than a few laughs.

We then got all the kids to draw their houses and laid out them all out around this strip of blue paper (representing the Code River) to map where they all lived. The drawings were incredibly beautiful and many of the kids kept drawing throughout the day.

It was a long day as the day before we interviewed a bunch of people and that night we had a nongkrong with a bunch of Kali Code Punks, whom we got to draw a map of the area after a few Bintangs. Our ideas about gender divisions in Indonesia, that girls don't nongkrong at night, proved to be incorrect, as there were a few females- but maybe this is because Kali Code is somewhat of a 'free space'. One of them decided that I was her saudara hidup (sister for life).

Tomorrow its back to more interviews and, as there's both a Chinese and a Javanese graveyard that Ratmakan and Jagalan Kampungs of Kali Code are built on we are trying to catch the local ghostbuster- most people have a cerita hantu (ghost story)- there's tales of bigfoot, faceless women, dismembered hands, mini horses...who you gonna call?!

Cities Without Maps – Kali Code mapping project

As part of our Asialink/Indonesian Visual Arts Archive (IVAA) residency in Jogyakarta Zanny Begg and I are producing a mapping project of Kali Code with Vanie (a local activist from the area). The mapping project is comprised of a film, a publication and a film screening from a warung cinema on Kali Code. The warung cinema will also travel to other places in the world for further exhibitions. The maps have been generated through workshops (such as a drawing workshop with local kids), discussions, film interviews, our own drawings and other forms of observation.

Cities Without Maps is an artistic mapping project for a Kampung along the Code River (pronounced cho-day), Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This is an area which has hitherto existed without a map based on any Cartisan principles of perspective and scale. Beginning the process of making a map – for a place which exists relatively happily without one -presented us with the challenge of reinventing what a map is. Do we just map the geographic space or do we map other social aspects which constitute this physical space? For example, how does a map reflect issues such as how many people live in each house or how space is used differently by men and women, older or younger people? What purpose does a map represent for a community who has shaky legal ownership ofthe land they live on, and who navigate between houses based on long term memory of which families have lived there? How do we map things like the numerous ghost stories which collect in a community built on a former Chinese grave-yard and provide traces of the lives of past residents? How do we include the numerous social maps inked directly onto the body through the strong tattoo culture in Kali Code?

This project is a mapping of the community, in collaboration with some of its members, where we view space as a combination of both its physical and social aspects. We decided that a map is not just a two dimensional object but a more complex representation of the various connections which make up a specific location. This project has been generated out of drawing and mapping workshops and discussions in thelocal area and video documentation of interviews with community members about their relationship to the area.

Kali Code is a unique and contradictory place: it exists as a semi-squatter community but its houses are relatively well established and not always under threat of immediate eviction; its community hasgreater freedom over the construction and design of their own immediate living space but are also subject to government repression, corruption and neglect. While most houses are self designed andconstructed several blocks of apartments have also been built along the river by developers and some residents live within these more regulated living spaces. During this mapping project building was underway for a new block of apartments and several houses in the squatter community were marked for demolition.

Kali Code is home to poor people and also those who choose this place so that they can live without society judging them for personal choices over sexuality, marital status or other indicators of dissent such as tattoos. It is a somewhat permissive space relatively autonomous from other more formal city where young people come to nongkrong (hang out) and set up houses together. But Kali Code is alsoa densely packed and highly communal (self) regulated space with a porous boundary between public and private life and many obligations for community participation and responsibility.

Part of our inspiration in this project is Mike Davis's book Planet of Slums which explores how the majority of people in the world live outside formal economic and government structures. While these "slums"have many social problems and exist in states of genuine poverty theycan also generate important examples of community based architecture, social planning and autonomy. These aspects link into our ongoing interest in researching the structures of urban communities and the"free", "public" or "communal" spaces people continuously create within them.

Cities Without Maps grows out of the 2016: Archive Project which is a ten year artistic mapping of the suburb of Redfern which we began in 2006. 2016 is both the postcode for Redfern and the scheduled date forcompletion of the project. Redfern is an inner city suburb of Sydneywhich has traditionally been home to strong and numerous workingclass, Indigenous, migrant and student communities but which is alsounder going a rapid process of gentrification. From this interest inour local community has grown an interest in urbanism more broadly and the autonomous spaces communities can create within existing citystructures.

This mapping project challenges the notion of the "monolithic metropolis" by looking at the various gaps and striated spaces that exist within city life and the ways in which these spaces will alwaysconflict with attempts at spatial homogenisation and/or gentrification.

Esky update, Indonesia and.....

Since returning from my New York/Montreal adventures I have been pretty sewn up with this Esky project I worked on with a fellow architect-y friend from Melbourne, Christie Petsinis. What is Esky you ask? Esky is an inflatable, nomadic structure that travelled to different locations and parasited onto different events during the recent Next Wave Festival.

The idea behind Esky came from attending the previous Next Wave festival and noticing at a huge opening everyone was outside, around the trestle table with buckets of beer, rather than looking at the art inside. Art openings and festivals in general are equally about the social side as seeing the art, so instead of making art to compete with the bar, we decided to make the art the bar.

The inflatable structure was handmade by myself with Alice Krueger over many months. I seem to remember a hazy blur of sewing and sewing and sewing… Neither of us had any experience in making inflatables- or sewing skills for that matter- so there was a lot of high school maths, guess work and lateral thinking involved. Christie did a fantastic job of organising heaps of amazing sponsors from small and mostly local businesses who were all really incredible and supportive of the project.
We also had a crazy time as the festival brought on a risk assessment officer a few weeks before the festival and we had to hire an engineer to certify the structure [!] and fire fighters, security guards, have everything tagged by an electrician… it was “an experience!”. Not to mention Nylex [the company that owns the trademark on the word "esky" has asked us not to call it "Esky" post festival- so from now on Esky is known as "Schmigloo".

Life after Esky….

Now I have just arrived in Indonesia where I am doing a residency with Zanny Begg (we have a long term collaborative project together www.2016archiveproject.com). The residency is through Asialink and is at the Indonesian Visual Art Archive in Yogyakarta.

I hope to be updating my website whilst I’m over here with these projects and an online version of the Zine fair program I made for the MCA last month. (if I can battle the dial-up!)

So lately my life has consisted alot of learning new skills. Useful skills, like how to build a giant inflatable... At the moment I'm doing all-nighters sewing, sorting through videos, playing with radios and contemplating the nature of collaborations...
[all these elements will make sense when they all come together- i hope!]
Anyways I'm working on an inflatable, portable bar. The general ballyhoo about it is that at art openings the social side weighs up equally to the actual art, so I wanted to create a bar that WAS the art. Sifting through some past text about it I found the original squib about it. It's quite absurd how much of it is actually on point to what I'm actually working on right now. People keep telling me it's an ambitious project, but I guess I've been thinking about it for a year and a half so it just feels like I've always known it was gonna happen.
Anyways it's part of Next Wave Festival in Melbourne in May- that's why I've been thinking about it for so long- we got a Kickstart Grant a while back. Anyways I asked my friend Christie to collaborate on this project as she is a (practicing) architect, unlike me, with the thought that there could be some insight in designing it. It hasn't worked out that way as Christie works full time. I've actually been working with my (now) friend Alice who builds sets for the opera, I didn't really know her before I sent out an email asking for insight into building inflatables but she's awesome. We spent so long on the design because we were so afraid of messing it up and using metres of pricey fabric it was kinda hilarious, but i guess worthwhile. Yesterday I finished sewing the outer dome. The design is basically shaped like a giant igloo, its double-skinned so people can come and go as they please without deflating the whole structure! -well, it IS a bar. Anyways the text below is my initial thoughts and I thought it would be interesting to see how much of the initial insane vision comes to fruition in May!

Esky: A crazy fusion of interventionist art, architecture and… drinking!

Imagine if you got to an art opening and looked for the bar, but then realised that the bar was the art! That’s right- the project, Esky; we want to propose for the 2008 Next Wave Festival is a portable bar. Festivals in themselves are all about people coming closer together; the focal point for people interacting with each other is often around a drinking hole. Similar to art openings, where often they are just as much a social event as about seeing the art, we have decided to embrace these ideas and bring them together. Bars are a meeting point, people tend to gravitate towards them. Instead of the art trying to compete with the bar, the art installation will be the festival bar.

The idea for Esky evolved from the theme for the 2008 Next Wave festival, Closer Together. Within our increasingly globalised culture, we tend to spend more time on the internet or phone, than interacting with each other. Let’s face it- receiving an email or SMS doesn’t quite have the same personal touch as a handwritten letter or even just hearing someone’s voice. Bars seem to be one place where chance encounters are still able to happen. Are people increasingly feeling the need to reach out, but can only do so through the thin guise of the consumption of alcohol? People often do drink to be closer together. We will use technologies, such as SMS services and the internet, that have aided in causing more isolation in our society, as a tool to find the location of Esky each night and bring people closer together.

Esky will be an inflatable bar that fits within a cart to be towed to venues around the festival in a parasitic way, this relocation will allow more people to experience Esky and cross promote the events that it’s positioned outside of. The inflatable structure will form the walls and roof of the bar. One of the benefits of Esky being inflatable is that it is lightweight and compact, therefore being able to be transported easily from venues by a cart- this will allow us to mount curbs and attach right onto the front entrance! The interior also involves a screening area with a dynamic sound set up. The hard structure of the cart is functional- made up of removable furniture for patrons once it’s inflated. the alcohol is served from the base of the cart once the inflatable structure and the furniture are removed. The cart will be able to be towed easily by a car and detached to get closer to a venue, right up to the front entrance. We want to gather up all those people who would normally be milling outside the opening. Whilst people are drinking they will be experiencing art. Not unlike some of the avant-garde designers in the 60s, such as Archigram, whom worked on movable cities projects, we have created our own Situationist architecture with Esky. Bringing the architecture to where it is most needed, the various venues.

The location of Esky is tracked through the website, an SMS service or simply through word of mouth. The SMS service simply involves the keyword, ‘esky’, to be SMS-ed to us and an automated message revealing the day’s location will bounce back in a reply SMS message. These methods will add to the excitement and hype of finding Esky.

The overall form of the structure stems form the name ‘Esky’, which is obviously an abbreviation of Eskimo, therefore the inflatable could take the form of an igloo- which also relates to the ideas of an ‘Esky’, a portable ‘cool box’ to transport alcohol. The dome like shape of the inflatable and the ridges used in sectioning off inflatable structures will echo the lines of ice bricks used for igloos.

Inside the Esky bar it is broken up with another small section within. Inside this inflatable section video and images are back-projected onto the wall adjoining the interior of Esky. No sound will be able to be heard directly from the video, but the sound can be heard via the pirate radio transmitter that will be transmitting to a series of small transistor radios built into the removable seating, allowing the sound to be transmitted around the bar. Performers will also be able to use this space in a similar way.

so that's the general blah, let's wait and see...

Festival of The Photocopier

Last month I was in a show in Melbourne that was part of the Festival of The Photocopier. It was at Platform, which if you don't know the spaces they are these incredible boxes under Flinders St train station [you can see them in the photo]. They are like this art deco gem hidden in the middle of Melbourne. Anyways Eloise Peace organised this great show featuring a different zine maker in each box. There was also a zine fair to top it all off! Tom Civil sent me a couple of pics of it as unfortunately I wasn't able to make it down there for it. One is the zine fair, the other one is a close up of my box. Where I displayed my latest zine "Culture and Other Shocks" and the originals, which I made on my recent jaunt to Japan, New York and Canada.

being a better blogger

ok, so I think I've finally realised that blogging is just like making zines, just without the photocopier or the tactile end product...either way i've decided to try and actually use this thing.

I guess one place to start would be a bit of an update of what i got up to on my trip to North America on the Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship...

The first place I actually visited was Japan, where I had a show in Osaka with Emily Hasslehoof, featuring a series of my screenprints and handmade books.

In New York the 16beaver collective organised a walking tour for me of the lower east side. It was especially interesting as this area of NY has a complex and interesting history of urban change and has been through a rapid process of gentrification in the past. This parallels my current research and projects based in the Redfern area in Sydney. Whilst on the tour we visited the Sixth Street Community Centre where we learnt about the area in the 70s, how it was quite abandoned and dishevelled and no one wanted to live there. The speaker was heavily involved in liberating these buildings and helping set them up as inhabitable spaces. They continued from this point to negotiate with the state and local councils for funding to help them purchase these buildings and set them up as ‘community land trusts’ these are somewhat like a cooperative housing model, though the people living in them, now owned them. We also visited a man whom has been photographing people in the Lower East Side since the 70s and had an incredible archive of images of the area. This related to one of my collaborative projects, which is a small 10 year archive of the Redfern area in Sydney. We talked extensively with him about gentrification and his relationship to the Lower East Side. We also visited ABC NoRio, a community centre for the arts with a very DIY philosophy that has been operating for over 25 years and spoke about how initially the centre was set up for the local community, but now people who use it generally (as they can’t afford to) don’t live in the area due to the gentrified nature of it.

I also gave a presentation at the 16beaver space, that has been operating for numerous years about my work, especially in regards to SquatSpace, the collective I work with, and talked with the 16beaver collective about visiting Australia for an exhibition I am currently co-organising for February 2009 at the Performance Space in Redfern, There Goes The Neighbourhood (www.theregoestheneighbourhood.org). The presentation I gave at the 16Beaver space allowed a discussion around the politics of urban change. They also gave me a number of publications relating to topics of interest to me. I also spoke to the collective about the upcoming exhibition and their interest in the project. The show is based on the themes of gentrification and urban change and will include a forum/workshop component as well as a publication/reader. Meeting the 16beaver collective gave me a chance to discuss this project further and invite them to participate in the show in 2009.

Travelling up to Montreal, Canada I attended, and presented at the Artivistic Conference with Lucas Ihlein (whom I work in the SquatSpace collective with). At the conference I met members of a group called The Think Tank That Wishes To Remain Nameless and discovered they had put together a reader on gentrification in the past. This will obviously directly relate to the upcoming TGTN show.

In New York in November I attended the Performa Festival, curated by Roselee Goldberg. One of the pieces that I participated in was a recreation of Allan Kaprow’s Push and Pull: A Furniture Comedy For Hans Hoffman. I discovered this piece relates to the upcoming TGTN exhibition in the way that it involved the participants to deal with the process of negotiating space and am thinking of restaging the piece for the exhibition.

Lucas Ihlein and I also organised a DIY screening of some videos we had of the squatting scene in Sydney and also of some of SquatSpace’s projects around 50 people came and we had very positive feedback as well as a discussion about Montreal’s squatting scene and the gentrification of the St Henri area, where the screening was. I met a girl who had been researching a paper on gentrification in the area.

Another aspect of my artist practice is bookbinding and zine making. Whilst in Canada I produced a new zine about my travels and participated in two zine fairs, one in Montreal, Expozine and Canzine in Halifax, Nova Scotia and met many people whom were interested in my work, and vice versa. In Halifax I also visited the Anchor Archive and Zine Library, for zines and artist’s books, my work is now in their collection and I am in contact with the people who run it. Also having some of my zines and books in the Anchor Archive hopefully means that more people will be able to read them.
